3rd District Green Infrastructure Demonstration

Kansas City, Missouri

For nearly a decade, Kansas City’s Water Services Department has been looking to Vireo for innovative approaches to green infrastructure. This project combines the need for reduced combined sewer overflows in the City’s urban core with educational programs, green collar job training, and neighborhood involvement. Project partnerships with East High School, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Avenue of Life are helping to promote these resourceful solutions and cost-effective maintenance.

Vireo led a team of professionals to design these several green infrastructure opportunities, including a football field with subsurface storage and infiltration, pond improvements to optimize water storage and treatment, retrofitting a parking lot with pervious paving, and additional water detention basins with native plantings.
