Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation

Natural Resource Management and Climate Action Planning

Mayetta, Kansas

Since 2012, Vireo (as part of Ad Astra Collaborative) has supported the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation (PBPN) natural resources management and climate resilience planning efforts within its reservation in northeastern Kansas. Led by Vireo, water resources planners, engineers, ecologists, and engagement specialists have worked with the Nation to restore environmentally and culturally significant habitat, improve land and water management practices, protect and develop critical water resources, and build tribal resilience in the face of climate change.

Key elements of the projects include:

  • a Section 203 Preliminary Watershed Assessment to study water availability

  • Integrated Facility Study to develop plans for ecosystem restoration and streambank stabilization

  • Land and Water Management Plan to address habitat, wetland and agriculture plans

  • Critical Elements Plan to guide water quality protection efforts

  • a Tribal climate resilience engagement to prepare for a Tribal Climate Resilience Plan

  • Priority Climate Action Plan, completed in April 2024

  • A Comprehensive Climate Action Plan currently in progress.
