Strang Park
Inclusive Playground
Overland Park, Kansas
Strang Park has served as a neighborhood park and historical landmark for the City of Overland Park for decades, but has recently become a destination playground that draws visitors from all over the metro area, and beyond.
Vireo worked with neighborhood leaders and stakeholders to wholly redesign the site and develop a new plan that works with the site’s existing pedestrian connections, adjacent residential and library buildings, as well as increased parking, ADA access, and other contextual opportunities and challenges.
One particular community desire was to incorporate universal, or inclusive, play equipment, as well as elements that commemorate local history, such as the Strang Line Interurban Railroad and Martin Luther King Jr. This includes a revamp of the historical Strang Line Plaza with a new shelter, sensory garden, outdoor games, restroom, and interpretive signage.
Vireo artfully tied these park elements together to highlight Strang Park’s historical significance, to welcome all members of the community, and to continue providing a place of community togetherness.
