Omaha Inland Port Authority Innovation District Plan

Omaha, Nebraska

After decades of slow decline, North Downtown Omaha (NDO) is in the midst of a dramatic revival. The Omaha Inland Port Authority (OIPA) is looking to Vireo to lead the community engagement process for the new Innovation District’s efforts to guide the area’s future.

NDO was largely an industrial area decades ago, but has recently seen an explosion of new development with hotels, restaurants, office spaces, housing and a 24,000-seat baseball stadium. Today’s challenge is continuing with purposeful growth and creating a more vibrant environment while actively preventing displacement of existing residents.

A wide range of engagement activities and community meetings are in progress as the OIPA seeks to mix cutting-edge startups, incubators and companies in a way that creates innovation and jobs while also building an inclusive community.

Vireo has been working with community leaders, business leaders, non-profits and institutions specializing in logistics, biotech, skilled trades, and art to create a plan that creates a thriving, empowered and welcoming environment that fosters growth while embracing the cultural history of the area and its long-time residents.
