Westport Stormwater Improvements

And Green Infrastructure

Kansas City, Missouri

Westport is one of Kansas City, Missouri’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. But what was once the launching point for the SantaFe Trail often finds itself under several feet of water during heavy rains.

As Westport developed from a frontier outpost along Mill Creek to a fully urban neighborhood, stormwater infrastructure failed to keep up and periodic floods have been doing millions of dollars in property damage. In response, the Westport Regional Business League and the City of Kansas City called on Vireo to lead the landscape design, green infrastructure, park planning and streetscape elements associated with of one of the city’s largest stormwater projects to date.

At each end of the project is an underground stormwater storage facility with a 2 million gallon capacity, with new 60-inch piping connecting the two. Above ground, though, Mill Street will be entirely redeveloped with permeable paving, green infrastructure and street trees. An existing city park on the south end has also been excavated and will be entirely redeveloped above one of the storage facilities.
