Parkville Riverfront Ecosystem Restoration

Working with the City of Parkville, we set the long-term vision for Platte Landing’s wetland and riparian habitat restoration, which broke ground on 40 acres of floodplain along the Missouri River. This cornerstone project will lead to additional restoration opportunities within 3,000 acres of adjacent floodplain.

Highlander Development

Federal HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson toured Highlander, a mixed-use, mixed-income development in Omaha and spoke highly of it. He specifically noted the community garden and the strength of public-private partnerships.

Although designs that are sensitive to sustainability, livability, and natural systems are second nature to our designers on this project, these efforts are getting recognized here with a purposeful design that aims to strengthen the community.

Johnson County Park & Recreation District Inclusive Playgrounds

After design and construction is complete, it all pays off when we can share in the fun on this Shawnee Mission Park inclusive playground. We worked with Johnson County Park and Recreation District to develop the County's second inclusive playground for people of all abilities and ages.

Local Firms working with Students at KU Edwards Campus

Scott Schulte, Senior Environmental Planner, is not only a part of the Vireo team, but he teaches an environmental planning class at the University of Kansas. "Vireo is one of the many ways KU collaborates with area employers and community colleges to create pathways for students to earn a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of General Studies in environmental studies from KU." We are glad to be one of the local firms working with environmental studies graduates, as the "need for people with a blend of science and policy knowledge will [grow]" with KU Edwards Campus.

Norterre - Multi-use & Senior Living

Vireo is the site planner and landscape architect on this $66 million dollar, master-planned community. It is the first of its kind in the country, consisting of residential homes for all stages of life, including young families, active adults and seniors. The first phase of the project includes a healthy living center, café, households for seniors and short-term rehabilitation suites. The Town Square is a focal point, with multi-use, outdoor gathering space, shaded seating, and a splash pad.

Vireo offered insight on how to design with the topography and avoid massive cut and fill grading. This resulted in a more ecologically sustainable design with substantially less infrastructure costs.

3-Trails National Historic Trail

The success of Vireo’s work on Kansas City’s 6th District Trails Study has in part led to the development of the metro-wide 3-Trails concept study and plan. Vireo facilitated this additional work with the Mid-America Regional Council and the National Park Service.
