Independence Ave Pedestrian Safety Plan
Kansas City, Missouri
Through the Planning Sustainable Places initiative, the City of Kansas City, in coordination with the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and a Steering Committee of community members, developed the Independence Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements Study. It moves the transportation recommendations of Invest Northeast (2013) forward and supports the vision of the newly created Independence Avenue Special Character Overlay District (2016). It also provides detailed information that City staff, elected officials, and community members may use as they pursue funding for design and construction of recommended improvements. Vireo led multi-lingual community engagement (English, Spanish, and Somali), analyzed corridor walkability, and helped frame recommendations for the project.
